地層이 아닌 紙層,
하퍼스 바자 매거진과 록시땅의 쇼핑백을 재활용하여 종이를 쌓은 두 가지의 화병을 제작하였습니다.
종이라는 같은 재료에서 출발하였지만 종이의 다양한 가능성을 보여줄 수 있도록 닮은 듯 다른 모습으로 완성하였습니다
하나의 화병은 종이를 커팅 후 켜켜이 쌓아 제작하였고, 다른 화병은 커팅 된 종이의 오프 컷을 사용하여 종이 반죽을 만들어 제작하였습니다.
인쇄된 종이가 가진 색과 여러 겹의 다양한 색이 얇게 비치며 만들어내는 면이 가까이서 보면 선, 멀리서 보면 일렁이는 면이 됩니다.
이번 프로젝트에선 종이의 방수와 보존을 위해 옻칠을 하였는데, 옻칠이 내부까지 침투할 수 있도록 옻 용액에 담가 공기를 빼는 작업을 진행했습니다.
록시땅과 하퍼스 바자가 가진 브랜드 이미지에 부합하도록 원재료 배치부터 옻칠까지 그러데이션을 주었고, 꺾이는 면에 그림자가 지며 텍스처에 한 번 더 포인트를 줄 수 있는 디자인으로 제작하였습니다.
새로운 소재, 새로운 테크닉을 탐구하는 고되지만 재밌는 프로젝트였습니다. 산업체에서 나오는 폐기물과 잉여 생산물을 활용한 선순환 구조를 가진 작업을 동료 작가들과 함께 할 수 있어 의미 있었습니다.

“Paper Stratum No. 1” and “Paper Stratum No. 2” are remarkable pieces created entirely from paper. Through the imaginative repurposing of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine and L’Occitane’s shopping bags, these vases showcase the boundless possibilities inherent in the medium.
The construction of these vases involved two distinct techniques, resulting in visually captivating outcomes. One method involved meticulously stacking and layering cut pieces of paper, while the other utilized paper pulp derived from the remnants of the cut paper. The combination of these techniques produced an exquisite interplay of colors and textures.
Upon close inspection, one can witness the seamless merging of printed patterns into delicate lines, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. When viewed from a distance, the undulating surfaces of the vases add depth and intrigue to their overall appearance.
To ensure the longevity and preservation of the paper, a waterproof ottchil (lacquer) was meticulously applied. The paper was immersed in an ottchil solution, allowing for optimal penetration and the removal of any trapped air. In harmony with the brand identity of L’Occitane and Harper’s Bazaar, a gradient effect was employed, transitioning seamlessly from the arrangement of raw materials to the refined ottchil finish.
The vases’ designs include thoughtfully crafted curved sides, which introduce captivating shadows and add an additional layer of visual interest. This deliberate element further enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the pieces.
The creation of these vases was both challenging and enjoyable, as it involved the exploration of new materials and techniques. The project embraced the repurposing of industrial waste and surplus products, resulting in works of profound significance.
“Paper Stratum No. 1” and “Paper Stratum No. 2” stand as testaments to the transformative power of creativity, showcasing the beauty that can emerge from unconventional or discarded materials. They serve as inspiring examples of how art and sustainability can intertwine to create meaningful and visually striking pieces.
